a quick specific question please.
yesterday I fired up my 78 gs1000 for a quick ride. After a few minutes I started noticing a loud popping noise on the left side during deceleration I took it back home and changed the plugs (not much difference) I also noticed that the bike was trying not to idle properily............help and thanks..Tags: None

check for an air leak, possibly a tear, in the rubber intake manifolds, or a loose and leaking exhaust header pipe or exhaust gasket

Al lstock?
I have a Kerker 4>1 on mine, slight re-jetting, nothing radical.
It always pops and makes fun noises during deceleration.
Plugs don't make any difference.
Check for leaks as already stated.Keith

Popping is caused by an overly lean condition.
It can be caused by too much air, leaky boot etc.
Leaness can also be caused by a fuel blockage
which is what it sounds like in your case since it
went away. My guess is you might have had a little
piece of trash in your pilot jet on either carb 1 or 2 that worked
its way out.
Put an inline fuel filter on your bike.
Do you have any rust in your tank?
It would have only caused a very small piece to cause that.
Peace
