best exhaust for the buck
Hello, I just became a member and proud owner of a 1983 GS1100ED. I would like to upgrade my exhaust to 4 into 1. I've looked up the V&H and MAC systems. Any insight or experience with these? I'm open for recomendations. Thanks .Tags: None

I have the V&H chrome megaphone on my '79 GS1000E. Very happy with it. It flows better than stock and increases performance as long as you re-jet correctly. Allows access to oil filter and you can keep your centerstand. IMO, the Mac is not as good of quality. And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

V&H doesn't make an exhaust for 550's, so MAC or Kerker (not made anymore either) is our only choice. i've seen a MAC chrome set on a 550, it looks very nice.

I don't know about MAC, but I did have a Vance & Hines 4-into-1 installed on a 1982 GS850G in the early 90's. Had it for four years. Excellent unit, recommend it highly.
Not too noisy either, which is another benefit. Louder than stock, of course, but still quite bearable.

Kerker is nice. It's true, they have discontinued most of there pipes for older bikes. But, if you look around, they can still usually be found. I found a new one from a vendor on ebay for my 550. They seem to be good about not blueing to bad too. Spray several coats of heat resistant paint into the headpipes before installing. Good Luck!!!

Keep an eye on Ebay. I see NOS pipes from Kerker, Supertrapp, Yosh, and others from time to time for lots of models.

I am going to be going in the other direction, My bike (GS1100G) has a Kerker 4 into 1 system (has some damage) and I am going to replace with a nice like new OEM 4 into 2 system I got on eBay! I am doing this only because I want to attach Vetter saddle bags and the Kerker gets in the way!
From my experience, the Kerker is a pretty good system to consider too.
