Need help with wierd electrical problem

Hey all you elecrical experts. I have a wierd problem with my 83 850 that I just can figure out. When I turn the key on, all the turn signals will come on as if they were running lights, and the headlight comes on very dim. The battery is fully charged. I tried replaceing the turn signal flasher, but it did not make any difference. I have taken the left had control switch apart and cleaned it, but it did not make any difference either. I am at a loss. I do not have any idea as to what the problem is. Has anyone ever ran into this, or does anyone have any ideas was to what the problem coujld be?

Check all the ground wire connections, particularly those at the battery. It sounds like current is running through the indicator lights because of a bad ground. I worked on a Kawasaki yesterday which was doing the same thing, admittedly it was being parted-out, but I did want to see if it would turn over so I hooked-up a battery and checked it out. Indicator lights came on and it had a bad ground. Hope this helps. Dave J

As mentioned, check grounds. Also check the main electrical connections; you said the headlight was dim with a fully charged battery. That sounds like corrosion on a connection, could be the ignition switch or some of the male/female electrical connections.
I use an aerosol electrical cleaner, like TV tuner cleaner, most auto parts stores carry similar cleaners.
I had a problem with my ignition switch, tail light was intermittent, and a few shot of cleaner cleared that problem. I then cleaned every male/female connection on the bike. Make sure the cleaner is safe for use on plastics.

make sure your bike is wired properly according to your manual and as you go clean all connections thus eliminating any breakdowns while on the road. I believe that earl and some others would agree that its best to do proper maintenance than a quick fix, unless you just love to work more than ride.
