A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

How do I prepare an o-ring chain that's been in storage?

I've been running a few things through my head and I was wondering about the chain on my 1100. It hasn't been used for over a year and I want to ride it late this summer without ruining the o-ring chain. I figure that the o-rings will have gotten themselves stuck to the plates on the chain and I'm unsure how to loosen them up.

Is the chain rusted? Or just sitting with the old lube on it. Stored indoors or out?

If it is in resonably good condition. I would pull it, put it in a pan and either soak it or heavy spray with a O-ring compatible oil and gradually work it back to life. If you want I can inquire next week with my buddy that owns a bike shop to see if he has any more tips.

The chain is fairly clean, it's definately not grungy, and the bike has been indoors the whole time.

If that is the case, IMO you can probably just put it on the centerstand or elavate the rear wheel and work in a couple of coats of a good quality sticky 0-ring chain oil while roatating the wheel/chain. I do inside rollers first and then spray the out sides. Let it setup good minimize the throw off.

I'd go one step further. After the lube. Clean off the excess chain lube with kerosene on a rag (won't hurt o-rings) and give the chain a good coat of chain wax.

A good clean with kero on a rag would get rid of built up gunge, then lube well. This is what the facory manul says for regular maintenance.

To prepare an O ring chain a buttery garlic sauce is recommended by some...

Seriously, (who me?) spray that chain with lots of WD-40, cleans and lubes in one easy step. Final lube with chain wax, I use Maxima, and it will be ready to go! :D

Serve up with sunny days and twisty roads!
