    petcock new or rebuild?

so my petcock is letting gas out in the on position. i know it's cheaper to rebuild it, but would it be better to buy a pingle? if i rebuild my original how long will it last? is the pingle that much better than stock? thanks for the help!!

If you trust yourself to shut the valve when you're done running the bike then yes definitely get the pingle.

I just rebuilt mine. Kit was about $20. Pretty straight forward. Just watch how it comes apart, make sure the spring goes back in the same position.

How long will it last? Well my original one lasted 22 years. I expect this one will to.

BTW the little metal disk attached to the diaphram was broke in 2 pieces in mine causing it to malfunction. It was sucking fuel thru the vacumn hose into #2 cyl.

Does anyone know the cost of a pingle?

And I have always wondered why one can not just turn our vacumn petcock to prime with out flooding the carbs. Anyone know that one?

If you search you can find a pingle for $80-90 (valve & adapter) Pingle also makes a vacuum operated petcock too

funny you should ask. :-) I just ordered one from Streetfighters.
Pingle 6211AH valve was $64.60. A1702C adapter plate was $11.35.
          Shipping $6 total $81.95

The reason we cannot leave our vacuum petcocks set to prime without flooding the carbs is that 99% of us cannot install float bowl needles that dont leak. If the needles seat as they should and the float level is set correctly, then there will be no leak and you could leave the petcock set on prime. On older carbs, this would likely require lapping in the float needles due to many years of wear in this area. I find it nearly impossible to get a float needle seat that will not seep. I buy Pingle valves and turn them off to avoid this problem.

            Thank you Earl,

I have always wondered why and you are the first to answer that question.

You should also turn the fuel off before turning the engine off

Mine is doing the same on # 2 carb.
Already checked float levels, pilot jets and seats and spark (new Dana coils wires and spark plugs) any ideas?
Forgot to add: recent Stator and hone, new rings and headgasket valve adjustment

                    Re: This may sound dumb

Pingel valve is a mechanical petcock. There is no vacuum line used with one.
You have to remember to turn it to the off position anytime the engine is shut down. It has an off, reserve and run position.

The troublesome leaking diaphram of a stock petcock is eliminated and since it mechanically turns off the fuel, even if you have seeping float bowl needles, it does not matter because there can be no fuel flow in the off position.

Keltic If you are having problems with the #2 carb ?? Try running the bike ON prime and disconnect/plug the vacuum line the goes to the #2 carb.
Look for evidence of fuel in the vacuum line, it indicated a bad petcock
