    Recovering from a bonehead manoever...

    I have an '82 GS850G with c. 27K Miles.

Last Fall, I replaced the air filter with a washable foam filter. The dealer sold me some great stuff to spray onto the filter to make it sticky. I put too much on and didn't wait for it to dry.

All this red sticky stuff got sucked into the engine, which went from running like a swiss watch to sputtering and dogging. I washed out the air filter. I replaced the fouled sparkplugs. I ran carb cleaner additive in my gas.

The bike now starts, accelerates, and once warm, runs fairly smoothly. But, the engine sometimes hesitates and sometimes loses power, particularly when cruising with a small throttle opening at highway speeds.

There is a hose that runs from the airbox to the cylinder head. I wonder if this got clogged by the air filter spray and is perhaps causing the continued problems.

    Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

That hose is the breather hose from the valve cover; I don't think that is the problem. More likely you've clogged up some passages in your carbs.

Thanks for the speedy replies. I suspected as much, but hoped for an easier solution than cleaning/rebuilding the carbs.

You can try feeding the bike a bottle of fuel injector cleaner.

Just add it to the gas and drive the bike until it needs a refill.

No guarantee on this, but it can dissolve other petroleum-based junk, and might work, and the injector cleaners tend to be much kinder to seals than carb cleaners.

Thanks, Ron. I appreciate the suggestion and will give it a try.
