air compressor tips?

I'm thinking about buying an air compressor. In the immediate future I'd like to use it to drive tools, but may eventually want to use it for spray painting or sandblasting also.

Any tips? Are there any particular brands to go for or stay away from?

I have a dirrect drive 5hp, 25 gallon tank one I use, and it is just about the minimum for running rotary air tools, smaller than this and you spend alot of time waiting for the presure to build back up when useing a 1/2" impact driver.
check around the local pawn shops, you could find a good deal, just remember that pawn brokers are just like used car dealers, you have to haggle to get a good price.

I got mine new at wall mart for $100, it had been dropped and one of the wheels was bent way in, and they had raided the presure switch off it to fix another for a coustomer, regularly it was a $300+ compressor.
it cost me $35 to put it back to new condition.

I used to have a 2hp/20 gal compressor worked fine for air tools. I had to replace it because it disapeared I bought a NEW Oilless type compressors, big mistake they are VERY NOISEY. Buy the type that has a seperate motor & compressor.

I got a 5hp 25gal oiless Craftsmen from sears years ago and I love it. To date it has been used for almost every job imaginable except for sand blasting and that is yet to come as well. It drives the dog crazy

This past weekend I was pricing some compressors. I'm interested in doing some paint spraying - I got a quote to paint my bike - $700, so I was considering doing it myself.

Anyone know what the minimum output should be for paint spraying??

You can spray with just about any compressor, it's a pretty low volume affair compared to driving a rotary tool.
