# 1 has already started turning brown and #2 is black and wet . I think I already know the answer but am asking anyway.also I am getting some leaking from under the heat shields on the exhaust when the bike starts up and even after it is off and cooled any ideas? Thanks in advance

Two distinct possibilities there.

1 & 4 Are on one coil

2 & 3 Are on the other coil

I just corrected the same "TYPE" of problem on one of my bikes (GSXR1100), but my GS1100 had the same problem before.
There were two different solutions, for the same situation, a "Non-Firing" plug..

1st Scenario was the '81 GS1100:

Found Problem was the wire lead that "Twists" into the cap, that slips onto the plug had a bad connection.
Repaired it by, disconnecting the wire from the cap, then cutting off approximately 1/4" on the wire, then "Screwed" the wire back into the cap..
Voil?, problem fixed on the GS1100


2nd Scenario was the '94 GSXR1100:

Looked for the similar situation on the '81 GS, but no luck was making a good tight connection.
Found that the spade connector had a BAD connection, where the wire "Crimped" into the connection, causing and intermittent short at first, but then total failure shortly there after.
Repaired it by, getting a new shielded spade (female) connector, and crimping the wire into the new one..
Voil?, Problem fixed on the GSXR1100

Good Luck, if all those things check out OK, could be your pickup or a loose connector the coil plugs into.

Oh, hehe I forgot the 2nd part of Your original ?..

Your heat shields you call them..
Are you reffering to the flanges that the bolts go through??
If so, you need "NEW" exhaust donuts that go in front of the Header tubes @ the head, it's just basically a crush type washer that seals the exhaust.

You can get them from your local dealer, and the are not that bad in price.

Really? I woudn't have considered a petcock for a single foul plug. What's the reasoning?

(not adversarial... really interested in the answer. I like odd answers, it means I'm missing info and need to fill the gap.)

On the BS carbs The vacuum line for the petcock is hooked to the #2 carb. If the vacuum diaphram in the petcock leaks it will allow fuel to be drawn thru the vacuum hose flooding the #2 cylinder

it is the petcock had the tank and carbs off petcock is leaking. now to find a replacment

How does the bike sound? Perhaps the carbs are out of sync and more fuel or air is getting to one cylinder/plug more then the other.

Stick a carb sync on there and check it out.
