what pods for a 550 es???

    Hey there,

Does anyone know if K&N make pods for the dual carb 1983 gs550ES? I am trying to find a part number to order from but are not have much luck!

    Thanks
    Alex

I've called both K&N and Uni, no dice.

The dual carbs on the '83-'86 GS550 have oval flanges. When these bikes were current models, both companies had pod filters available (I raced an '83 550E in the mid eighties with K&N pods) but they are no longer available.

I am actively looking for something, but so far the only thing I've found to increase air flow is the K&N free flow replacement element, which might slightly increase air flow, but not nearly as much as pulling the air box and installing pods.

If I do find something, I'll let you know.

      Griffin,

I have currently the K&N OE style filter, it did'nt show any improvement, but I have built a new rear subframe so the standard airbox has got to go!

Maybe it time to start designing a "ram air" airbox HMMMM.

You can still get the dynojet stage 3 kits for the 550es did you ever try one of those during your racing days???

      Thanks

My bike had pods, stage three kit, open Yoshi race pipe, dyna coils, and a few other odds and ends on it.

It dyno'd at 67bhp, but all the power was above about 7,500 rpm. It rode like a two stroke after the mods, in that it was pretty anemic, and then WHAM! at 7,000 rpm it was pulling your arms out of their sockets.

Fun bike, good for racing, but LOUD. I bought it from a racer in '85, then sold it to a racer for parts when I high sided hard with it in '87.

        Wish I'd kept the pods.

I was just on the K&N site and they show dimensions for universal oval pod filters. I will measure my carbs tonight and let you know if I find anything close.

By chance do you have a website that lists a whole bunch of bikes that you have owned over the years? If you type in gs550es on goggle the first hit you always get is a site with someone who used to endurance race a 550es. thought it might be you.

I called K&N about those oval pods. The picture is wrong, the pods are oval, but the holes are round. I thought I had it made until the customer service girl tossed a bucket of ice water on that idea.

No, that's not my website, if it's the one I think it is, that guy has way more $$$$ than I ever thought about having. I only raced for two seasons while I was in college, and never finished higher at any club race than eighth.

I never finished in the bottom quarter either, except for two DNFs.

I became a much better rider, and learned a lot about riding while racing. It took me wrecking my bike to learn that sometimes, your bike is just slower than someone else's, and no matter what you do, you simply will not be able to keep up with him.

try this this may be what you are looking for

email the guy and see if this filter a pod type filter and has 2 openings for the carbs or if it is a oem replacement.

my pod pod filters for my 550 kind of looked like this they were flat and mounted right up to the carbs and they were pod filters, not all pods are cone shaped.
