    Engine Swap

Will a 1980 GS1000G engine directly swap with a 77 GS750? I've looked at both and it seems like it should, SHOULD. I've been told that the 1000 engine is exactly like the 750, only with larger cylinders. However, that may have been for the same year bikes.

What about the exhaust and carbs?

    Thanks.

The GS1000G is a shaft drive the GS750 is chain drive You would need a GS1000E chain drive model and yes it will fit with minor mods to the motor mounts Carbs would have to be rejetted or changed depending on the year of the motor

Wouldn't that just be the transmission that determines if it's shaft or chain drive, or is the engine on a shaftie designed differently than a chain drive?

The latter. The engine on a shaftie is totally different because it has a "middle gear" at the left back quarter that corrects the rotation 90 degrees, so it can power the shaft.

        A chain-driven 750 may well interchange with a chain-driven 1000; likewise, a shaftie GS850G engine will interchange with a GS1000G engine.

Keep shafties shafties and chainies chainies.
