My first post! This site looks awesome - I'm sure someone can educate me. I have a 79 GS850 owned since new. The right front brake is causing me a problem. Sometimes the caliper housing will actually rub on the disk (at the bottom edge - just off the swept surface). It appears the pads/piston do not always extend far enough to keep the caliper clear of the disk. (Is this making sense?) The pads are new - my attempt to solve the problem in the first place. I have since bled the lines also. This helped for a short time. Do I need to have the calipers rebuilt? Are there kits available for this - my dealer says he can't get such a thing. Is it a task a Sunday mechanic can handle? Thanks in advance!

even tho i rebuilt my brakes, i'm not sure i'm qualified to answer u! ....but sounds like maybe your piston in the brake caliper is sticking (?)its hard to tell from your post. i had to replace both piston and boots in my 81 750. the pistons were rusted and VERY pitted .they wouldn't move at all. so the caliper sat at an awkward angle. my dealer said it couldn;t be done (meaning u can't buy new pistons without the calipers) and wanted me to buy 2 new calipers at 400. a piece! yeah righto bucko...! i found an 800 number in the back of motorcycist magazine and for around 30 a piece i got a rebuild kit- included pistons and boots. they work fine.-- and i'd check to make sure no hardware has come loose or got bent somehow.... ? -

Caliper repair kits are easily obtainable, if your dealer can,t help, try any mail order site.
Just one thing though....you havent recently taken the front wheel off and incorrectly fitted a spacer??????I know that I did it last week which had a similar effect when it came to refitting and threw everything out of alinement....just a thought.Comment

I guess I'll go after a rebuild kit. Thanks all. Yes I have also put the spacers on backwards before and found the caliper don't quite fit on the rotors so you know something is wrong.Comment

Just to continue this thread. I have rebuilt the calipers (new piston seal and boot), drained, refilled and bleeded my brakes. Now they feel like mush. I keep checking for air in the lines but don't see any when bleeding. Any thoughts on what else might be causing the poor feel? The lever travel proportionate to brake power is much greater now also. The reservoir is to the full line.Comment

Seems to me that you`ve still got some air in the system! It can take quite a time to free the lines completely of air.
I presume you used new fluid? Are all the banjo`s and bleed screws tight?
Did you keep the reservoir topped up during the process?Comment
