Any one ever used motor oil on their chain?

Was looking through my manual and it said to use motor oil or chain grease. Figured I'd try it since I have some in the garage.

I'd say: stay with the chain grease. I've used motor oil in the past, but it gets very messy after a ride or two. And for some reason, applying grease on an oiled chain, doesn't work very well. It seems the grease just won't stick to the chain anymore.

MY CHAIN BREW IS MOTOR OIL and 50% stp. i dont think its the best stuff that one can use, but i oil my cahin ever couple of hundred miles. i have to put cardboard under the bike so i dont ruin the driveway any more

Wax??

I have been using a chain lube from the local Honda dealer that contains wax. It goes on rather dry but has worked very well. The product is from PJ1 I believe. I was told that it is less damaging to the o-rings in a sealed chain. Costs about ten bucks but beats damaging the driveway.

I've used plenty of motor oil as a chain lube, it sucks! Makes the thing messy and seems to collect tons of road gunk. Problem is that it is free (I use the used junk that comes nice and clean from the engine- yeah, right) and easy. I've gotta break the habbit though, as it seems to shorten the life of the chain! I'm buying a nice new o-ring jobby next week and will try my damdist to use parrafin or specialty grease.

Just remember the age of that advice. Back in the olden days the GS1000 came standard with an o ring chain....cutting edge technology. I had bikes before the GS with normal chains...normal lubricant was oil based, boiling in Duckhams etc....no wonder shafts were invented!

O ring chains made chains acceptable and they lasted. Motor oil was safe for the o rings...other lubricants could have solvents that attached the o rings. Nowdays lubes are made for o rings, so use them.
