    New to the board

Hey guys I'm new to this board and i've got an electrical system question.
I purchased a used GS850 '82 and I've already sunk some money into it only to find out that the charging circuit isn't charging the battery. I checked connections to make sure there tight, checked all my fuses and still :? my voltmeter reads that there is about 7 volts going to the battery with the one terminal removed. The bike already has some 30K miles on it. Is it worth taking to the shop or will they rake me over the coals. I'd like to fix it myself. But I'm not sure how detailed those manuals are. Are there some other simple tests I can perform to try and locate the problem?
    Thanx

Sounds like you can use a volt meter. So if you know the difference between the stator, the regulator/rectifyer, and the battery . . . and if you have found the wiring/connectors inbetween them, then you should be able to follow the tests described in the other articals the other guys mentioned.
Only 7 volts, you say. I would say start with the stator volt test.
