    Blows fuses like crazy, 82 GS1100G stored 10 years

    I bought a 1982 GS1100G with 32K miles out of a residential garage where it had been put up "wet" ten years ago. All fluids changed, carbs and tank cleaned to a shine, petcock rebuilt with new insides, new plugs. I have'nt shined it yet, but I removed all the Vetter hard bags so I could work on it.
    I runs pretty well for about 3/4 to a full mile and then blows the fuse to the engine. Twice I put in a larger fuse just to get home.

    What have I not done? What have I done wrong? I cannot find any troubleshooting guides in the books. I definetely need some advice.

    The first thing you have to do is remove the oversize fuses before they cause the wiring harness to burn up. The fuse is a safety device that protects the harness from overload. The reason the fuse is burning out is the draw/load exceed the capacity of the fuse and the reason the capacity is being exceeded is increased resistance. Corrosion is the most common cause of increased resistance. I would start by removing the back from the fuse block and inspecting the internal connections for corrosion. Next,
    using a wiring diagram, trace the ignition circuit starting at the battery and ending at the ignition coils. In the process, you will have checked the clutch lockout switch, ignition switch, kill switch, ignition module and every connector in between. At each point as you progress away from the battery, take a multimeter and check line voltage and compare it to battery terminal voltage. If all connections are clean, the voltages should stay relatively the same as they started at. (there will be some loss due to length of wire runs....normal) Check for brittle/hardened or scorched wires also. Inspect every connector. Remove the headlight and check the connectors inside the headlight shell as part of your ignition system plugs in in the headlight shell. Check battery and engine grounds also.

      Blown Fuses

      Thank you for all the information. I will definately follow the procedures that you have outlined. In the Stator Papers V it mentions a regulator/rectifier death being a cause of blown fuses and goes on to make a statement to check things expanded on by your list. Thank you very much.

        Battery fried

        I just found my battery boiled dry. This after riding around the block 2 times. It (the bike) died at the corner. Had to jumpstart and ride home, and it died again in the driveway. Started checking and found a dry battery, all 6 cells. It's pretty new.
