    '79 GS Quits!

    Hey,

This bike is a '79 GS850G, has electonic ignition (aftermarket?). Runs good for a while, after about 20 min bike just dies. Let sit for 5min and she runs again. Rebuilt the carbs, had tank sealed don't think its fuel related, anyone else had similar problem?

    Partial answer:
Yep, 79 GS850 would originally had contact breaker points in ignition. Other big change between 79 and 80 is the change to CV carberators.
Sorry, dont have answer to your problem, actaully having similar problem myself.

Had 850G for 14 years. Now have GK since 2005.

Sounds electrical. Coil or some other component on it's way out, getting warm and failing. Never has it happen on my bikes but had two lawn tractors that would do this exact thing. Cut grass for 20 minutes and shut off. No restarting. Wait half hour or so, start back up, go another 20. In both cases it turned out to be the ignition coils.

I've seen the same problem with a partially plugged gascap vent, and with coils breaking down with heat. Usually if it is the coils, it is only one coil, but I've seen one case where both coils would quit at the same time.
