Thinking about painting my extra tank this weekend...

I could have it glass beaded and primed here at work, but a guy here told me the blasting might warp it. He told me I'd probably get better results if I sanded it by hand. What do you all think?

I blasted one with a neat media recovery blaster. It used glass media, and was designed to recover and filter media at the point of blast.

It's original design was to blast paint from aircraft skins, so I was not afraid of warping. try to find one of those! I can't for the life of me remember what it was called. Too long ago, I suppose.

I blast and paint for a living and just 2 weeks ago did my own tank on my 83 gs 750. I assure you as long as its a fine grit you wont have any problems.

now this may sound silly... but why not chem strip it? talk about a time saver... spray it on, walk away, half hour later wipe it of, down to bare metal, now a quick pass with fine grit paper and ready to go.

With a sandblaster, you can strip the tank, chase the neighbor's cat, and generally get in all kinds of trouble...

I chem stripped mine with aircraft paint stripper, worked great, I am still going to blast it though because of rust on the underside of the tank where it is very difficult to reach with sand paper. I will use glass beads for this.

I went to a local paint shop to get a quote for stripping and priming my tank and side covers. They said that they would strip it with a course grade of bead and then a finer grade before filling in anything. No word about warping or deforming... 8O

Hows the inside of the tank?

Any rust on the inside? I hear some horror stories about coating the inside of the tank, but mine came out perfect. It is so clean and white inside I can hardly tell if it has gas in it.

I think it may be possible to warp a relatively flat panel like a car hood with a really high pressure sand blaster, but glass bead blasting a motorcycle tank won't hurt it in the least. I've used both bead blasters and paint removers, they both work well. The tank I'm working on now is full of rust and old flaking sealer so I'm having it chemically dipped. Only cost about $50 and should be perfectly clean for new sealer and paint.

I was wondering what type of tank sealer you recommend. I cleaned my tank out with Muriatic acid last year and it has been fine since although I recognize that the bare metal is prone to rusting (hence this question).
