Question about horsepower and quarter-mile speed of GS1000

    Question about horsepower and quarter-mile speed of GS1000

    I have been told that a V-Rod would blow my wheels off.
    What horsepower rating is GS1000 and what quarter-mile speed will it run?It is a 1980 model.

    I was told it was too old and slower than a V-Rod,I want to prove him wrong.

    It kind of depends, but I would not say a V rod could "blow our doors off".
    The GS1000 weighs 554 lbs and has 90 HP if stock. That is a power to weight ratio of 6.15 lbs/hp.

    The 2004 V Rod has 98 HP stock and weighs 596 lbs. That is 6.08 lbs/hp.

    Put a screaming eagle pipe on the V Rod and it gains 15 HP. Put a 4 into 1 V&H and jet kit/pods on the GS and it will gain about the same.

    If the GS has to carry a 160 lb rider and the V Rod has to carry a 225-250 lb rider, you can win every time on the GS. If the situation is reversed, you will lose. They are close enough in performance that the reflexes of the rider and his weight will make a big difference. (If you do go for it, make the run with only a half gallon of fuel in the tank to save some weight)

          I ran one last summer while my bike was not running tops and on the highway i had no dream of catching him. I simply did not have the top end to do it. but I'd bet large dollars that a 1/8 mile race would have proved futile for him. I would blow him away off the start every time and he would only catch and pass me when we would get up over 100 mph.

          I am not a real betting man monetarily but love to see how things work. When my bike is finished and all set back up correctly I would love to run one in the quarter mile with the screeching birdy pipe on it after that.

          The one I rode with last year was bone stock.

          My GS when done will be an 1100 with a ported head, degreed cams and 34mmcv carbs with a newly balanced and welded crank and all new clutch components. complete overhaul.

          I really really would like this challenge. I already have a VTX 1300 that is in line for it and I would love to add a V-rod to my line up

              I ride with a couple of hds (no v-rods). With my 850 I can whip any evo motor, but one buddy has a little superglide with an 88" twin cam. Ill put about 5 lengths on him up 80mph but then he catches me and drives past, then I catch him at about 110 and its over for him. I was surprized (pizzed) when a hd passed me so now Im puttin a 1000 motor. I plan on taking revenge.
              The vrod is kinda performance oriented, I think they are a little more respectable than the regular old style harleys.
              Theres not much better than handing out loseing tickets to some bigmouth who has $15000 or $20000 more into their bike- dont get me wrong- I like any nice bike just not the arrogance that seems to follow the hd crowd sometimes.
              My ole GLZ has as much charactor as anything at the bike night near me. Custom v twins have become so routine- it takes a good ole inline 4 to get people talking.
              GSes are definitely classics!!!!

                i went on a 2 1/2 hour ride yesterday in texas and oklahoma,across lake texoma,etc.I was ogling the Choctaw nation casino and didnt realize the light had turned gre.A guy on a roadking was behind me.He revved up his bike with the loud pipes to get my attention.Being the showoff that i am, i went through a quarter mile routine blasting through the gears.I slowed down to the speed limit, and finally he came up alongside me.He looked my way and waved,i looked at him and grinned,nodded, and we went on our separate ways.He was looking at my exhausts mostly,probably to see what kind of rice i was riding isince i have all the suzuki plates off.I put them back on today.I know i am too old to do stupid stuff like that,but my mind just wont accept it.

                  The Vrod is the one HD I can actually respect....nice powerful motor compared to their a/o twins. Figures they would have to go to Porsche for an engine that would be competetive with or 25+ year old Suzukis. Honestly, I wouldn't worry if some clown who is compensating for the lack of something says his $20K Harely can beat your 25 year old, $2000.00 suzuki...if that is the only thing he boast of, he isn't worth your bike's time.:-D

                    i use to work at a harley dealer and i have the say the v-rod is the worst bike i had ever ridden. absoluteley no turning radius at all. and if you guys ever see someone with a v-rod and an aftermarket exhaust, listen to the bike idleing,it will constantly fluctuate. so many peope use to complain that there aftermarket exhaust cause the bike to idle funny and it did. i personally think the bike is ugly ass hell especially with the gas tank under the seat.

                      My 1100 with Kerker 4-1, K&N pods, Dynojet stage 3 and the rest bone stock will chew up those noisy but sometimes beautiful Harleys.
                      1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.

                        All this discussion of Vrods versus old school Suzukis....makes me even more anxious to get my new exhaust mounted up and the jet kit dialed in!! Vrods are pretty cool looking, and I like the new engine. I simply can't stand the attitude of 95% of HD owners...

                          Haven't you guys seen the Speedchannel show Pinks! They had an 83 1100e
                          (valued at 3500.00) race three races against a 30,000.00 V-Rod . Needless to say,the GS took the V-Rod home.I ride with a friend who rides a custom HD 2002 Softail 1550 cubes.It,s fast ,and it hooks better than me,but I,m three bikes ahead coming into second ,and it just gets worse for the harley.
                          That bike is built too! I have a pipe and pods on my otherwise stock zuke.

                              Under equal conditions/riders, the V-Rod will beat a stock '80 1000.
                              Install a quality pipe and pods on the 1000, and it's pretty even in the 1/4.
                              And on the seventh day,after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
                              Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!
