Rear Axle

Anyone know where to get a "castle" bolt for a rear axle? I've got an extra front one if anyone wants to trade. Thanks,

My dad measured it today when he went to Hampton(where Napa is) he asked about getting one and they just laughed at him. Anyways, he says it's 16mm (18 threads per inch - he's british) Thanks,

The actual term is a 'castellated' nut.

Anybody got an opinion on just putting a stack of washers on top of a regular nut until it's flush with the cotter pin hole and then using a cotter pin?

Steve that what I plan on doing if I can't get the proper 'castellated' nut(thanks crusuki) Although my axle has a hole closer to the rim that I've got the pin in now. But I'm not sure there's enough play when I use that one. For now I'll leave it as is, since I only roll the bike in and out of the garage to work on it. I don't think I'll overheat bearings or anything rolling it 10 feet twice a day.

Hi Steve,
In a pinch and to get me from a to b I would use washers/regular nut and a cotter pin but I wouldn't do it and leave it at that.
There's no way the cotter pin would prevent the nut from backing off, even a fraction of a turn would cause it to become loose and we all have an idea where that would go. If you insist on going that route clean both threads and use blue Loctite along with the cotter pin or another idea, get a regular nut and a thin cutting wheel for a mini grinder and make your own.

Barry, if your wheel gets hard to turn when you tighten the axle you're missing parts. You should be able to snap that bolt right off before the bearings even begin to notice.
