    Oil leak question

I'm working on a '79 GS850. I took off the valve cover to adjust the valves, noticed that there was some leakage around one of those plastic end caps. The previous owner must also have noticed it, he had gooped it up pretty good with that blue silicone stuf on the outside of it. I went ahead and bought new caps. When I put them in, they seemed pretty snug. I also got one of those Real Gaskets for the seal under the cover. Now I've got everything back together, started up the bike, and that's where it leaks oil, right around the end caps.

I'm going to recheck the cover and the torque used (I used the values from Real Gasket, which are on the light side). Should I use a liquid gasket material around the caps? Anything else I should be looking at?

    Thanks guys

I always use a tiny drop of silicon sealer on the half moon end cap

I used a smear of Silastic silicon gasket around the outside of each half moon gasket. No more oil weeping.

Some people also use plumbers tape.

Thanks guys. Pretty much what I thought. I'll try tonight, let you know how things go.

Well, got it back together, this time with some silicone sealant around the half moons. Works great! No leakage. Thanks a lot guys. Now I can get this thing on the road. I have more questions, but that goes on a different thread.

Those plugs are there as an artifact of line boring the cam shaft holders. You can use anything you want to plug them up since there's absolutely no reason for them once the engine is done manufacturing.
