I had a bright idea to replace the beveled gears in my 850 with a set from
a GS1000 THEY will not fit The output shaft on the 850 is shorter and will not engage the gear splines Back to work putting the originals back in

Probably not, Scotty. The 850 is geared too low as it is for extended highway riding. Too many rpm's at 70-75 mph.
That's what makes the '84 GS1100GK so much better -- noticeably higher gearing, yet it has the same dependability and feel of the venerable 850.

Are you trying to change the middle or rear gears? Assume the middle from your description.
The rear would be a lot easier? If you can find a hub.
