    CHARGING NOT UP TO SNUFF

    HAS ANYONE FOUND A REPLACEMENT VOLTAGE REGULATER/RECTIFIER
    THAT PUTS OUT HIGHER POWER TO THE SYSTEM TO HANDLE EXTRA LIGHTING
    THE WAY MINE IS NOW IT'S BARELY CHARGING THE BATTERY
    1985 GS550L ONLY HAS 9925 MILES ON IT

    No, there really is no 'higher' output type except the Electrex stator/reg., and it is not much more powerful at all. Your best bet would be to go through ALL your wiring ends and either solder them straight into each other, and check/replace/ALL grounds in teh system. You will be suprised at how much more power you will get. Do a search on this forum under 'charging', and you will get a wealth of info. Welcome to the site! :twisted:

      The stock GS stator output averages about 270-280 watts. That is sufficient to run everything on the bike and charge the battery at a normal rate. The regulator/rectifier rectifies the stator AC output to DC voltage. The bike runs on DC voltage only, so in essence, everything on your bike runs off the battery and the charging system replenishes the battery. The stator output is all there is. Changing to alarger rectifier capable of handling more wattage does no good. That would be about the same as having a 10 gallon gas tank on your car and thinking if you put a bigger fuel pump on the engine, you could put 20 gallons of gas in the tank. :-)
      Your problem is not the stator output, it is resistance in the charging system. Resistance is usually increased (resulting in a decrease in charge rate to the battery) by corroded connectors in the electrical system. The corroded connectors can be anywhere in the bike's wiring system because the wiring system is an interconnected web of electrical capillaries. Clean all your wiring connections, switch contacts, fuse holders, internal fuse box connections, grounds, etc, and check to be sure the R/R is grounded directly to the battery neg terminal. It will make a difference.

        Be aware if you have a poor ground you can loose up to one volt. Make sure this doesn't happen by running a heavy ground wire direct from the
        (-) battery terminal to one of the reg mounting bolts
