Best way to store an engine

I've got a 450cc engine sitting on my work table. The plans I had to install it in a frame is on hold.

Anything special I should do while it is sittiing there? It has no spark plugs in it or oil in the crank case.

Put about 1 teaspoon of oil down each cylinder and rotate the crank. Either put some plugs in it or stuff something in the plug holes that won't end up in the cylinders. Put a couple of quarts of oil in the crankcase and rotate the crank quite a few times to get the oil circulating. This will coat most of the internals. Keep the intake and exhaust ports covered up. Store the engine in a dry place.

Question. How do I turn the crank on an engine that's not hooked up to anything?

You can remove the ignition cover and turn the engine with the large bolt, not the small one.

take the ignition cover off, and use a wrench on the big nut on the end of the crank shaft. Have the plugs out when you do this, but watch your eyes as some oil may come out when it goes thru the compression stroke.

Okay. I have been out of town.

I have emptied all the old oil out of the engine. Installed a new oil filter. Put a spark plug in each hole.

Now for the dumbass question. Where is the ignition cover? This is a 450cc from a Suzukimatic, shaft drive.
