    GS 850 1/4 mile times???

Hi guys, great forum you have here, I've already used a couple of tips I've seen posted here to fix the oil leaks my bike was having. Now that I've got it running good I was thinking of taking it to the track and having some fun with it. So does anyone have an idea what kind of numbers can be expected out of a bone stock 1980 GS850GL??

If you're a flyweight 90 pound japanese professional test rider, low 13's. If not I would guess low 14's. At any rate, please post your results. I've got an 850L too.

The GS1000G does 12.34 secs over the 1/4 at 110.8mph going by an old Cycle Guide test. The 850 would do a little slower perhaps. This is probably with guys quite good at doing the runs!

Frankly, folks, most of us don't care how fast or quick an 850 is. All we need to know is that it's fast enough, quick enough, and, most importantly, lasts long enough.

I was just thinking about 0-60 times earlier today. I have an 850 and an 1100 and I was trying to guess how quick they are to 60 MPH. Does anyone have any ideas about this?

Maybe you don't care, but I'd bet a lot of 850 owners wouldn't mind knowing what an average guy on an 850 could do at the track. What's "enough" for one guy might not be enough for another.

I agree with Nick (yet again it seems). It it feels fast enough it is. Other qualities do come into it, like do you like it?

Nonsense. One does not choose an 850 with performance numbers in mind. Those who regard performance numbers as important don't buy 850's; they go for the 1100E or the 1150.

I can't conceive of an 850 at a track. A GS850 is a good bike to get a rider to the track so he can enjoy the races.

my riding buddie of thrty years has an 850 and on one of my trips to the 1/4 i talked him into giving it a try. he was a complete rookie at the 1/4 and ran 13.7 if i recall correctly but it may have been quicker.. he also di very good and made it to the semi finals in bracket racing that day

                            Frankly, who cares ...

Speed freaks should just get on a Hayabusa and leave the venerable GS850 to those of us who appreciate it for what it is -- one of the best touring and commuting bikes ever made.

What a waste of a perfectly good motorcycle!
