    setting the points on a 79 gs1000L

    hiya!

    i am trying for the 3rd week to get my bike to start

    i have no clue how to set the points using the manual....it says to check for continuity, but when i do that nothing happens....the spark on 1-4 is weak....2-3 is strong....bike tries to start but wont, runs the battery down.

    is there a trick to setting the points? i bought a digital ohms-volts meter to set the points, but maybe im using the wrong setting? any help would be great...if i have to stare at 80 degrees without my bike anymore im going to crack!!!!

    i just put on new cylinder head.....valves are in specs....replaced petcock(thought i was having fuel delivery problem)...carbs were rebuilt last year...this bike ran like a dream last summer...now i cant get it to start...was starting to have this problem last year though....this damn thing wont start on ether....tries too....but wont

    gas does come out of the overflow tubes at the bottom of the bike, so that means its getting gas right? just not the right spark...either its firing too soon, too late, or not at the right time.....HELP!!!!

    If gas is coming out the overflow tubes, your float valve are stuck open or your floats are stuck. Did you drain the gas last winter when you put it away? After you drained the gas, did you run the bike to use up the gas in the floatbowls? If not, you may have to clean your carbs again. Also, you may nned a new coil on the 1-4 side. If you need to replace the coil, replace both of them with either Accel or Dyna coils for your type of ignition.
    Also, if it ran last year then the ignition timing won't have chaged much just sittig there for the winter. Generally the points need to be set at .014 to .016 inches the VOM should indicate the points opening and closing for the 1 and 4 cylinders just as the timing marks line up. Adjust the 2-3 timing with the smaller movable plate on the larger one.

      Ive been wanting to get an electronic ignition on the bike w/new coils....i guess i have an excuse now....it figures my floats are stuck....it is a pain in the arse to take of that damn airbox!!!!! i heard that god loves gs's...he must phuckin hate me....

        I just bit the bullet and replaced the coils with Accel units and the points with the Dyna S. Solved a lot of problems and gave me peace of mind KNOWING that those things can't come back to bite me.
        The GS750 (79) airbox is a piece of cake. So many of them are so much more difficult, I don't see why Suzuki had to get away from the pre-80 airbox design.

          I recommend the Dyna "S" ignition and coils too. And a manual.
          As for the fuel overflowing, the carbs don't have to come off if you don't want to take them off. You do need a stubby screwdriver to get under the phillips bowl screws. You also need some finger dexterity. After the bowls are off, put a towel down to catch anything you drop and to keep it from dropping somewhere you can't retrieve it. Push the float arm pin out and remove the float. The floatvalve needle should fall into your hand at this time. It's point faces up. Note what's "right side up" on the float. Remove and clean the seat the needle came out of. Check for burrs on the side of the valve and check the spring for operation. If the point of the valve (just below the point) has a noticable "ring" worn into it, you must replace it.
          Put everything back. This is where the finger dexterity comes in. For some it may be a little tricky but you replace the needle, hold it with the tip of your finger and then put the float up there to keep the needle in. Then slip the float pin back in. You may have to replace the bowl gaskets depending on their condition. Do one carb at a time.
          This should fix the overflowing. If the valve(s) leak again, it's most likely the carbs and possibly the tank need cleaning/repair. If your floats need height adjusting, you'll have to take the carbs off.
          And on the seventh day,after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
          Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!
