    1979 GS750L seat swap question....

    Does anybody know if a seat from a 79 850 or 1000 will fit a 79 750L?

I don't think so. I looked at some other seats for use on my 81 750L and the 850 and 1100 mounted differently and were a different size due to the frames being larger.

Was the seat noticably larger? I could probably fabricate new seat mounts but if it would look awkward I'll keep looking for a 750L seat.

The seats I looked at opened differently one had a hinge that allowed it to be opened without removing it.

All of the seats were wider and I believe a little longer but this is from memory and I looked at them over a year ago.

Seat would have to be from a "L" model I believe a 550 will fit 850/1000 is wider

            Todd,

1979 L model seats were unique to that year and are not interchangeable with any other model year or body style (G,E,S, etc.).

However, I believe that all the 1979 L chain drive model seats are interchangeable (550/750/1000) I'm not sure about the shaft drive bikes.

The differences between 1979 L seats and other model year L seats are more than just the seat mounting brackets. The sizes and shapes of the other year seat pans and foam profiles and covers are clearly different.

Even if you screwed around with welding new brackets on another year seat pan, you'd probably end up with odd-looking gaps between the seat pan and the frame, etc.

If your seat pan is OK, you can get a replacement foam and seat cover kit from Travalcade/Saddlemen. They're about $125.

I bought one and it fit perfectly and looked nice, but it was just as uncomfortable for me as the stock seat was, so I ended up having it modified at an upholstery shop.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll probably end up sending my seat pan to Sargent and get a custom profile made. I really like the look of some of the newer cruiser seats, I saw a custom for a GS1000 on Ebay and it sparked my interest.
