REGULATOR/RECTIFIER - STATOR '83 GS1100E
1983 GS1100E, 42,000 miles: R/R DIED SUMMER OF 2003. REPLACED WITH ELECTREX. WORKED GOOD FOR A MONTH THEN STATOR DIED. STATOR HAD CHECKED OUT GOOD PREVIOUSLY. REPLACED STATOR FROM ELECTREX. IN APRIL 2004 R/R DIED AGAIN. FOUND BURNED WIRES AT CRIMP CONNECTORS I USED ON THE THREE STATOR WIRES. (YEAH I KNOW I SHOULD HAVE SOLDERED THEM). GOT A NEW ELECTREX R/R FROM DENNIS KIRK. TECH SUPPORT AT ELECTREX SUGGESTED RELOCATING THE R/R TO A COOLER LOCATION. USED HORN MOUNT BRACKET HOLES TO ATTACH HOMEMADE BRACKETS TO LOCATE NEW R/R TO BETWEEN THE HORNS JUST BELOW THE STEERING HEAD. MADE NEW WIRING HARNESS FROM 12 GAUGE WIRE. SOLDERED THIS TIME. EVERYTHING WORKING GOOD AT THIS TIME. ON LAST RIDE I PUT MY HAND UNDER THE LEFT SIDECOVER WHILE CRUISING AT 60 MPH AND THE TECH WAS RIGHT, TONS OF HEAT WAS FLOWING THROUGH THE AREA BEHING THE SIDECOVER ON A 75 DEGREE DAY. SO FAR WIRES ARE COOL ALSO. BYPASSED THE THIRD STATOR WIRE GOING UP IN THE WIRING HARNESS AND WIRED DIRECTLY TO THE R/R. HOPE THIS MAY HELP SOMEONE ELSE.Tags: None

FAN
THE TECH AT ELECTREX SUGGESTED A CPU FAN AS ALTERNATIVE BUT I OPTED TO TRY THE RELOCATION INSTEAD TO REDUCE ANOTHER ELECTRICAL DEVICE THAT COULD FAIL. HOPEFULLY THIS WILL END ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. GS RIDING IS MORE FUN THAN GS MAINTENANCE.
