    '81 GS550T Charging system Amperage

I'm new to the board. I bought an '81 GS550T a month ago and the RR was shot on it. I was thinking about wiring in a car regulator and rectifier, but need to know how many amps the stock system pulls. If any body could help it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

Count the amperage of the fuses, since each one is a separate curcuit, add them together. That'll give you a max estimate. Then buy an Electrex RR unit and forget wiring in an automitive unit. It's just not worth the risk or effort.

Thanks for the info. Electrex has discontinued the RR for this model, but it still has the one for the 550E they use the same RR don't they?

I suspect that the only difference between the units is size and mounting position if you go for one off of a bigger bike with a larger electrical system. I have one off of a 750 on my bike and the side cover sticks out an extra inch but everything works well enough.

Thanks for the info. srivett. I'll try an RR for a different model.

Has everyone stopped using the honda regrectifier as a direct replacement for the suzy ones now or what?
The cb250n regrectifier is a gooditem to replace the stock suzy one with, and its fitted on a few newer models since now, cb250rs and a few others spring to mind, maybe someone who is more honda knowledgeable will comment on the models...

The reg/rec from a late '70s to early '80s Honda CB/CM 400 twins will work on a GS. The one I put on my '78 GS750 bolts right up to the pre-tapped holes underneath the battery box. 8)
