    No.2 and 3 Not Firing

On my '84 GS1150ef: the motor was running rough and losing power (see my post from July 25), I figured I had some fuel flow problems. I had the tank off, drained the float bowls, ran thru some carb cleaner and re-did all the valve adjustments while I was at it, all the right stuff. Still running low on power; lo and behold the two middle pipes are cold, so number 2 and 3 cylinders aren't firing (why didn't i check that before?!?!!)

I had the right igniter coil off (the one that fires 2 and 3) and the resistance across the 2 leads reads 3.94 ohms (the manual says 3-5 ohms) so it is bang on. What else could be the trouble here, what else should I check?

Thanks in advance, you guys always have some good tips and hints.

Re: No.2 and 3 Not Firing

Since 2 and 3 fire off the same coil, I suspect an electrical problem.
Have you taken both plugs out, reattached the plug leads and grounded the plugs to the engine to visually check them for spark?

Ya - no spark on either of them. I'm stumped.

just a tip for checking spark.....if you take the plug out keep it far away from the cylinder it goes in.....we didnt do that on my friends shadow and when he hit the starter button WOW! big fireball 8O ....almost took muh hair off

You know one coil is working OK, so let's find out if the other one works.

Mark your plug wires, so you don't get them confused later, then pull ALL the wires.

Now switch the line leads from the 1 and 4 coil to the other one and check for spark.

Got nothing?....simple solution: you need a coil

Got spark?... You may have a wiring problem, or a connector problem and you need to find where the break in the circuit is happening. This is the most probable cause, and finding it can be annoying, and time-consuming, but you gotta do it. Be sure to check the sensor output wires ofrom the right side of the engine.

If you have a book, follow the instructions for this step

No other problems? you need a new ignition controller.
