Key Help
Hey guys, I think I lost my only key today. I thought, hey, I'll just bypass the ignition, no biggie, crappy, but no biggie. Then I remembered that I need the key to get into the gas tank, so what do I do? Can Suzuki get one for me if I can read the serial number? Assuming it's the original key. Or do I just get another ignition/gas cap and key set? Any way to get the gas cap off without the key? Is there a non-key replacement? Man, what a bad effing day, thanks all, I'll keep the non-bike bad things to myself,Tags: None

The lock code number should be stamped on the side of the lock cylinder. You local locksmith can most likely make the key from code for 10 bucks. That's what they do.
Dealers of minions of Satan. They'll charge five times what the locksmith would (or more).
Hope the evening is better.

Thanks Michael, I'll start calling locksmiths tomorrow. The evening is almost over, actually the evening is over, it's 9:26pm, so that makes it the night I think, maybe the night will be better. Thanks anyways.

Hey Chucky, your code is on your gas cap? As in visible when the cap is locked in? Or visible when you open the tank?
Any suggestions on how to go about finding the code on my ignition block or whatever the part is called? Thanks guys,

the key code should be visable on the gas cap. All else fails take the ign switch and take it to a locksmith They will make a key

Key
Hey Barry, the key code on my gas cap is stamped into the little round insert that houses the key...it's in plain view and is 3 digits. I don't see any correlation between that and my VIN so I'm afraid that won't do you any good. I hope you find your key...that would sure be the best solution. If you do, I bet you'll never forget the key code number. Good luck.1980 GS1100E....Number 15!

Thanks guys. Billy, my dad used to drive a Triumph Trident(til he took it apart one day to slow the British oil leaks and soon met my mother.....) so I should be able to get the bike started, if not then I will PM you. Easy eh.......is it still that easy.......*devilish laugh*
So I looked on my gas tank cover, and there's a 3 digit number, and then I looked at the part the key goes in on the bike and I saw a six digit number, could that be my code? It was on the bottom of the part.
The numbers don't match at all: 236 and 316216(I'm not afraid of any of you having keys made and then coming here to steal my 400 ) So I just call around to locksmiths and see if any of them know what those numbers mean and if they can make a key? I think I'll call the Suzuki shop and see what they say. One of the parts guys and I have become good friends(sign number one that I'm in there way too much). Anyways, I'll start calling. I'd like to find the key as well, and get a copy or three made. I tried last year but it didn't seem possible and then just riding and work and all that got in the way. Wish me luck,

3 digits
Mine's a 3 digit number but, since the part the key goes in has a 6 digit number on your bike, I'll bet that's going to be it. The 3 digit number is also on my key. In any case, your buddy at the shop will be able to look it up.1980 GS1100E....Number 15!

Called the bike shop, not looking good, apparently Yamaha keys are simple to get from Yamaha, but Suzuki keys are not so simple to get from Suzuki. Anyway Suzuki wants $15 for a blank, and it MIGHT be the right one, if the keys were the same for 450's and 400's. So I called a couple locksmiths, one can do it today for $15 and extra keys are $5 each. So I'm on my way to get one right now, and if it works, a couple extras. I'll update you all later, gotta run and catch the 2:30 ferry.

Ah yes...I'll have to research that one to see just where i could put one. I'm good with switches. What amperage/wattage rating would be good?
Thanks!

I'm sure one located between the Push button starter and the relay would require less of an amperage rating than one between the relay and the starter itself. (though that is where it will probably have to go) So I'd say see what the current draw of the starter is for the starter on your bike, and go with a switch rated at a bit higher than that.
