Hey guys, I think I lost my only key today. I thought, hey, I'll just bypass the ignition, no biggie, crappy, but no biggie. Then I remembered that I need the key to get into the gas tank, so what do I do? Can Suzuki get one for me if I can read the serial number? Assuming it's the original key. Or do I just get another ignition/gas cap and key set? Any way to get the gas cap off without the key? Is there a non-key replacement? Man, what a bad effing day, thanks all, I'll keep the non-bike bad things to myself,

The lock code number should be stamped on the side of the lock cylinder. You local locksmith can most likely make the key from code for 10 bucks. That's what they do.

Dealers of minions of Satan. They'll charge five times what the locksmith would (or more).

Hope the evening is better.

Michael

Thanks Michael, I'll start calling locksmiths tomorrow. The evening is almost over, actually the evening is over, it's 9:26pm, so that makes it the night I think, maybe the night will be better. Thanks anyways.

Key code

Key code

My key code is also on my gas cap.....I sure hope the naughty boys don't see it. :!: :!: :!: :!:

Hey Chucky, your code is on your gas cap? As in visible when the cap is locked in? Or visible when you open the tank?

Any suggestions on how to go about finding the code on my ignition block or whatever the part is called? Thanks guys,

the key code should be visable on the gas cap. All else fails take the ign switch and take it to a locksmith They will make a key

If youneed to get the bike started to get around let me know by PM. I can tell you how but don't want to post it here for all the world to see. It's so simple it's frighteneing.

Key

Key

Hey Barry, the key code on my gas cap is stamped into the little round insert that houses the key...it's in plain view and is 3 digits. I don't see any correlation between that and my VIN so I'm afraid that won't do you any good. I hope you find your key...that would sure be the best solution. If you do, I bet you'll never forget the key code number. Good luck.

Thanks guys. Billy, my dad used to drive a Triumph Trident(til he took it apart one day to slow the British oil leaks and soon met my mother.....) so I should be able to get the bike started, if not then I will PM you. Easy eh.......is it still that easy.......*devilish laugh*

So I looked on my gas tank cover, and there's a 3 digit number, and then I looked at the part the key goes in on the bike and I saw a six digit number, could that be my code? It was on the bottom of the part.

The numbers don't match at all: 236 and 316216(I'm not afraid of any of you having keys made and then coming here to steal my 400 :) ) So I just call around to locksmiths and see if any of them know what those numbers mean and if they can make a key? I think I'll call the Suzuki shop and see what they say. One of the parts guys and I have become good friends(sign number one that I'm in there way too much). Anyways, I'll start calling. I'd like to find the key as well, and get a copy or three made. I tried last year but it didn't seem possible and then just riding and work and all that got in the way. Wish me luck,

3 digits

3 digits

Mine's a 3 digit number but, since the part the key goes in has a 6 digit number on your bike, I'll bet that's going to be it. :!: The 3 digit number is also on my key. In any case, your buddy at the shop will be able to look it up.

Called the bike shop, not looking good, apparently Yamaha keys are simple to get from Yamaha, but Suzuki keys are not so simple to get from Suzuki. Anyway Suzuki wants $15 for a blank, and it MIGHT be the right one, if the keys were the same for 450's and 400's. So I called a couple locksmiths, one can do it today for $15 and extra keys are $5 each. So I'm on my way to get one right now, and if it works, a couple extras. I'll update you all later, gotta run and catch the 2:30 ferry.

Oh no....is there a security mod we can do to our bikes to make them harder to steal. And no I don't wanna hear "Buy a pitbull" I don't have time for pets that aren't human or GS.

Could always throw a properly rated switch somewhere into the ignition circuitry..

Ah yes...I'll have to research that one to see just where i could put one. I'm good with switches. What amperage/wattage rating would be good?

Thanks!

Probably depends on where you put it.

I'm sure one located between the Push button starter and the relay would require less of an amperage rating than one between the relay and the starter itself. (though that is where it will probably have to go) So I'd say see what the current draw of the starter is for the starter on your bike, and go with a switch rated at a bit higher than that.

Not really...

The electrical system on the GS is so bone-headedly rudimentary that any security switch would be easily bypassed...

As for hotwiring them, anyone with a Clymer manual can easily see how it's done...

(I actually had to do a 'field expediant re-wire' on my 450 after I fried a wiring harness once. Hence the electrical system comments...)

P.S.

The easiest item to get the key-code from is the helmet lock.

The code will be on the side of the lock that faces in against the frame, so just unscrew the lock & look on the back...

A kill switch on the main power wire to the ignition would be a good idea.

I'm going to go ahead and tell everyone just how easy it is on our bikes, at least mine is this way, to get it started without a key. If your steering lock works your in decent shape. If not there is only one screw you need to remove to get the bike started. Even with the lock you only need to pull two bolts out and get the ignition switch out of the way. There is a round beauty cover on the bottom of most GS ignition switches. It's held on by two molded in clips, if they aren't broken and the cover is missing. Under that cover you will find a single screw. Remove that screw and the actual switch portion will drop out of the assembly. After that it only takes a screwdriver to operate the switch.

For the record: Detman and TheBigRed are THREAD THIEVES!!!!!

Extra switch! Pfft! Do it my way, just don't ride a bike valuable enough to steal. Although with my extra fuel tap, the bike would only get about 500 ft away and then run out of gas.

Anyways, back to the ORIGINAL post......got a copy made today, it works in the ignition, the gas cap and the seat lock. I believe those are the only three locks on the bike, so I'm set! I'll get two extras made tomorrow. $15 plus tax for the first and it'll be $10+ for two more, so I'll have 3 keys for less than 2 BLANKS would have cost from Suzuki. Of course, my key doesn't have black plastic that says suzukie on it. On the plus side, my key is a little larger(slightly harder to lose), and doesn't say suzuki on it(harder for a thief to guess where it came from). Well homework calls, then fire dept. so I should get going. Thanks all for the help, and keep the thread going on security measures if you want.

That would be assuming that the helmet lock is still in place.

On both my 550 and the 650 you can see where the metal plate that held the helmet lock was located, and what remains of it after it was broken off. :x :x

I've purchased just a helmet lock off of e-bay and plan on seeing if I can mount it under the seat as to not allow as easy access to break it off, while also holding the helmets a bit higher above the exhaust.

Time will tell if it will work or not though.
