Air Mixture Screw Settings for '83 550?

    I have a 1983 GS550L.

I recently cleaned my carbs, and I'm not sure if I got the air mixture screws set correctly. I counted 3 1/2 turns back from bottom, but that does seem a bit high. Could someone share their thoughts as to what the best setting is for them?

Also, what are people's opinions about the value of a carb sync? Do I need to do that after a cleaning? Or, is it just the icing on the cake?

    Thanks,
    Scott

The best way to set the mixture screws is to let the engine warm up good then adjust each one for the smoothest, highest idle. You'll usually find a spot that is only about 1/2 turn wide at most where the idle gets sweetest. You can synch them fairly close without the tool. Just use a small drill bit or something to check each butterfly opening and set them all against number 3. They won't be perfect, but they'll be good enough to get by.

Just did my 85 550E carbs a couple of weeks ago, the screws were between 2 (leanest) and 2.5 (richest), thus you could start at 2.5 and work down.
