    Two questions

Ok First, my bike (79 GS 750) just started back firing the other day along with sending a 6 inch flame from the exhaust....(kinda cool the first few times) but it sounds like crap and definately noticing a lack of performance now. What confuses me is that is just started doing this. This winter i put in a new 4 into 1 exhaust and put in a dyna 3 ignition. It was running pretty good before this last week except when it was just sitting at a stoplight. I did put in a new petcock kit and noticed that its not working right (it doesnt shut off). Any Ideas let me know

Next question, I have replaced my stator and have an electrex R/R, bought a brand new battery last year....and its still not charging. I am thinking that i have some wiring problems but i went around this winter checking for bad ground connections and even replaced the lead ground wire from the battery to the engine casing. Luckily my bike kick starts really nice but i am sick of not having my turn signals work from time to time. I know that my stator is working cause i can rev my bike up and the lights change brightness but this is at like 4-6 grand before this happens. Any ideas or should i start making up a new wiring harness?

    Thanks!

far from experienced with these exact problems, I would venture that a leaking petcock combined with a misadjusted or stuck float seal might be your backfire problem... kinda like running it on choke, more gas to air?? check your spark plugs to see how rich it's been running?

I'm just the "first response", the real help will be along any minute now!

Thats kind of what i was thinking...i know that my petcock is definately not working as it should but i was hoping that my float seals were still good...hopefully i wont wake up to an engine full of gas

        petcock

I think what snowbeard meant was not that the petcock wasn't shutting off (it may not be) but that the diaphragm was leaking allowing fuel directly into the engine. It may be the floats too, just some more options to think about...Mike

thats what i mean by not working right ... when the petcock is in the on position fuel pours out of it like its on prime...so the vaccum part seems to be messed up...and i jsut put a new seal kit in the stupid thing...also dont have a reserve for whatever reason...thought i was getting really good gas mileage there.... Hopefully its just my petcock that is messed up and that will be the end of it...any other ideas? What about the electrical part or am i on my own for that?

It may be too late by now (24 hours later), but if you're worried about gas leaking into the engine I'd seriously consider clamping off the fuel line with a hand-clamp (don't use a vice grips unless you put a protective pad between the jaws and the fuel line) until you've corrected the problem...

              Good Luck,
