how long between valve adjustment
hey all, just got done with a valve adjustment and when i looked in the book it said to do the job every 600 miles. I was wondering if that was a miss print or if it's acurate. secondly i would like to know about how many miles (or some other measure) people go between valve adjustments.

How long
Personally i do everything thing at 5000ks but the i give the old girl a hard time. Always nice to be on top of things. I drop the sump of every oil change just to have a look for bearing cages or bits of other stuff that might give me some grief.

The 600 miles is a miss-print. Miles between needed adjustments can vary a lot. For my '79 GS1000E, the factory manual says to INSPECT every 7,500 miles. In the past, I've inspected mine twice (about 15,000 miles total since the last actual adjustments were needed) and was surprised to see all of them still within spec's. At other inspections, I've had to adjust 2 or 3 of them. I've got over 120,000 miles and I'm the original owner. And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

I sure hope so, My GS850G is at 59,500 miles, and I am putting about 100 miles a week on her.
How hard is a valve adjustment? Should I pay up or study up? For reference, of my mechanical ability, the carb rebuild was a breez, but I did pay someone to pull of my front rim for the tire change so that I did not screw up the brakes! Never removed a bike anythig before.

It depends a lot on what bike you have, and what type of valve adjustment, the screw type adjusters require more service then the shim under bucket type. 600 miles is way off either way, I would have to check my vavle clearance every week. 8O
It may be 6000 miles though, not sure. I check mine a couple times a year, with the screw type adjusters.

I was a bit concerned because I'm putting about 50-140 miles on the bike everyday just riding around having fun. Eating up my allocated gas money as well but the hell with it. Gotta have some fun in life right?
The valve job will come eventually.

i talked to a mechanic today and he guessed that 6k was about right. as to the ease of it, the first time is a pain in the but, but after that when you know what you are doing it's not so bad. I would offer that if you know someone that has done this sort of thing ask them to help you.
