About to junk bike... still no spark

The problem is intermittant no spark. When the problem first occured, it died like maybe it was a charging/battery problem. It wouldn't spark at all, sometimes it would turn over after releasing the start button, but then it died if I tried to take off. I tested the ignition and the ignitor seemed to be bad but maybe not. I replaced the ignition with a Dyna 3, apparently I installed it correctly, but the bike still did the same thing, with a full charged battery, sometimes it would turn over when the start button was released. Installed new battery... same but I managed to get it down the block and back (it wanted to die the whole time, popping like it missed a few times, and the plugs were fouled after that) Cleaned kill switch and start button, installed new plugs same....

After I installed the new battery, I managed to keep it running long enough to check charging output, it did not go past 13.5V at 5000rpm
The ohmic readings between the stator leads are good, but I haven't been able to get it running again to check AC output voltage.

I can't understand this, if it was a charging problem, the new battery should have kept it running longer than it did, but 13.5V is too low right, and it should have started immediately even if it wasn't charging. I can't even keep it running to check the charging system if it doesn't stay running...Please help.... or if not... anyone who wants a bike in otherwise very good condition with many spares send me a pm. Thanks

If it is fouling the plugs I would check the carbs. Have you cleaned the carbs??

The carbs are clean, they just fouled from the ignition missing

        What about your coils?

Coils would be first, then if that fails get a new-used ignition module off Ebay (assuming you have CDI (80's bike, a/o 70's) not points)...

The coils are within the 3-5 ohm range closer to 5

What are the secondary readings on the coils? Stock coils should read 30-50k and Dyna or Accel about 15-20K.

I tried to check secondary voltage but I am not sure I am doing it correctly. I didn't get any reading. It would be testing it between the spark plug leads right? Like 1-3 and 2-4. I didn't think it could be the coils since it runs and then no spark to any wires. Are coils known to fail at the same time?

You measure the leads from 1 & 4 and 2 & 3. Put one probe inside each plug cap. Ignition off.

I tried checking the secondary resistance again, no reading of any kind or continuity between any of the spark plug leads. I don't know if I need to unscrew the resistor inserts or whatever from the boots to test.

Whatever you do, make sure you start by taking a deep breath and relax!! These guys and gals are awesome ... it might take a few days, but they WILL figure out what's going on...

                      Regards,

If the plug caps are good all you need to do is make contact with the leads. You can try unscrewing the caps and see if you get readings off the wires themselves. If so the caps need to be replaced. If you still get no reading get some GSXR coils.

Yeah I hear that planecrazy, I usually like working on the bike but not when it hasn't ran for 3 weeks. definitely a love-hate relationship
