Cam question
Does anyone know how Vance and Hines 042 cams work with an 1166 kit? They have 0.235 lift. I was also wondering if the guides need to be reworked or if they require new springs. Thanks in advance.Tags: None

You sure that lift number isn't duration? Lift should be somewhere around .370 I think. My modified grind, as V&H calls them, have lift of about .370 with a duration of 243 if I remember right. No guide mods but they recommend hardened rockers and new spring kit.

Steve,
If that 235 is duration it's going to have very high lift numbers. You can expect to have to do guide work, hardened rockers, and heavy duty spring kit. Titanium retainers wouldn't be a bad idea either. This is assuming the number is duration. .235 lift is too low of a figure. Drop ins have .310.

I have the G4 cams in my 1229, 355 lift and 262 duration, as far as I know (Skip can probably confirm or deny) the springs are upgraded, but that's it.

I got my numbers crossed up - sorry. Yea .345 lift and 246 duration.
So I should be able to get by without valve guide work? New springs and hardened rockers seems then to be the general concensus.

No valve guide work. If you use used rocker arms the cams may eat up a few. Definitely a spring kit.

At and above .370 lift you need to look at shortening the guides. I would certainly look at valve to piston clearance though - .050 is recomended. Springs would not hurt and by the way have you priced hardened rockers lately- about $60 each. Just spoke to Kip at Cam Motion about getting another set of cams- quoted me about $160 with cores. Good Luck, Ed.

Yeap I'm running G4 cams too in a 1166 13-1 engine with stock valves, springs, guides and rockers. The only thing that was close was the oem adjustment screws, they still worked but is was close (turning them in do to the smaller cam base circle).1166cc 1/8 ET 6.09@111.88
