When I took off my rear shocks yesterday I realized that the lower shock mount stud had been stripped/cross threaded and now I want to run a die over it to see if I can recover any of the threads...it's only the last 3 or 4 threads that have been affected but I cannot get a nut on it. Are all shock mount threads M10 x 1.25????
aye aye aye...I gotta get this fixed because I take my 2nd road test this week!

Junk it. You could run a die over it, but if it's actually been crossthreaded the threads will still be trashed.

That said, you could probably rethread it enough to go on a test ride, but youshould replace it ASAP.

It pays to know what stores in your area have a good selection of metric hardware. It's pretty pathetic over here. The best selection is not at the home improvement megastores but at the mom and pop hardware in town.

I think there's still enough good thread left past the cross-threded part I just can't get the acorn nut past the junk thread to the good thread....I'm actually considering just cutting off the bit thats ruined. Am I playing with fire here?

Yes. Fix it right. Do not cut the bolt and use it just so you can ride it a little sooner. Go get a proper replacement.

When I got my bike one of the shock studs had been pretty thoroughly stripped. I removed what was left of the threads with emery cloth and ran the next closest sized die over it, which happened to be standard (non-metric). Worked perfectly - Put a chromed acorn nut on it and have been running it like that for the past year.
