(pre ride help)gs 1150 wiggle

So whats the issue here? I am just about complete with the resto of my 1150 and gonna be out riding it soon. I have read reports of a wiggle coming off throttle at speed..some say its the front wheel(being small),some say its the gear you wear(loose grabbing air causing instablity) and some say steering bearings.. Anyways I am looking for enlightenment on causes and corrections BEFORE I get myself into trouble.. Anything would be a great help..

The 1150 "wiggle" is somewhat of a characteristic, some are better some are worse! To reduce it the places to start are, tyres make certain they are fresh and a matched set. Suspension make certain it is in good, did you rebuild the forks? replace all the bushes? upper lower and the nylon ones on the damper rod. What condition is your rear shock? the linkage bearings? swing arm bearings? steering head bearings? I assume you have had the motor out, are the engine mounts done to the correct torque specs? Have your wheels dynamically balanced. Ahnd carb synch is vital on this bike as it will have a big impact on engine vibration.
The "wiggle" is a small weave is the bike decelerates through approx. 50 mph, which most people seem to only notice if they have a loose grip on the bars, I have only ever had mine do it once ( the tyres were shagged I was on my way to get a new set fitted)so I recommend not lettig go of the bars at that sort of speed.

thanks, The tires are brand new.Forks rebuilt to the "T". Carbs cleaned and synced new strter clutch hub etc. Motor mouts are good and rear shock and bushings look stout.. I guess only time will tell hopefully this weekend, putting it all back together. One question anyone tried a dampener?

After pretty much going through Dink's list on my 1150, I finally started experimenting with fork oil viscosity. I settled on straight automatic transmission fluid in the forks and no air pressure. It has not wobbled in a year. The wobble was more annoying than anthing else. I didnt consider it dangerous, but maybe mine was not as severe as some have had???

One more thing is make sure your triple clamp bolts are tight where the tubes slide thru and the front and rear tire are aligned, to each other, small thing but I have found a bunch loose on bikes I have worked on through the years, atf in the forks? all of my bikes have it,and even my primary in my 650 bsa

When I started to buy wider tires, I had a wiggle. 8O Dam thing would never let me take my hands off the handlebars. Last year I went back to stock size, and the bike is smooth. I can now wave at passing bikers without the fear of falling off.

I had survere Wobble On my GS1150....I sovled it by tightening the swinging arm Pivet bolt

Mine was about 95% cured by new tires. It will do it only randomly now and mostly on a very rough road. You never feel it unless you completely take your hands off the grips. I rode a FJ 1200 yamaha last week....same thing....16 inch front wheel. BTW it was a early model in 89 the FJ`s got a 17...wonder why?
