    Shift Shaft Seal..

Just found me an oil leak. This is something I don't like but can live with untill winter to fix if it won't hurt.

It's around the shift shaft @ the case.

Is this just an o-ring seal or am I looking at something else?

Is it leaking a special gear fluid (hypoid) OR is it just sump oil (chain drive)?

When replacing this seal will I end up doing more work? and if so what?

    Again, thanks for the knowledge

try a search, I remember someone telling me the answer to this one, but now I've forgotten...
also check the cover plate that the clutch rod passes thru, on mine it has a bushing that had slipped out and left a bit of play in the rod as it entered the engine. after I reseated the brass bushing, the rod was much more stable and didn't leak at the engine very much at all!

    good luck!!

It is a leaking oil seal, replace it now, it is cheap and not difficult. BTW it is only engine oil leaking from it.

Yes. Not too hard to replace, and it will get worse fast. I tried to ignore it on my 82 100e, much to my chagrin. Ruined a good boot by soaking it in oil.
