i have a little digital multi meter, coils testing ?

how can i do some checks on my two coils on my 80 gs450L with a little digital multimeter i have ?

what settings do i use and for what tests ? how many volts or X ohms do i set it to for certain tests ?
there are several ohms and voltage settings on the meter,


i suspect one of the coils is going bad due to having a wet spark plug all of a sudden lately. and the other oen is dry but black.

also how do you test a spark plug wire boot/cap ?

Believe it or not a friend of mine is comming over today to do that test on my coils. I'll let you know what he does.

i just got 3.9 and 4.0 resistance at 200 setting on my coils

i think 5 is the most you want to see on old coils
they are putting out awesome white snappy spark at the plugs, so humm.,.

good luck with yours, did you clean every leectrical connection on your bike already ?
i might have unknowingly fixed my problem by doing such before i checked for spark,
im gonna fire her up in a minute and see how it revs and idles,.

Plug caps should have a 5ohm rating.

Thats what I meant!

With two plug leads on a coil, there is an internal mechanical connection between the two leads, so resistance is easy to measure. Since the voltage is produced by inductance, I dont know how to check resistance with only a single lead on a coil. I am not aware of any connection that can be made to complete the circuit. Maybe some of our electrical engineers can make a suggestion.
