On my carb, is the choke on when pressed down or up?

I'm not absolutely certain for a 400 (I dont have one), but normally choke knob all the way down is off. Pulled out all the way if full choke on.

On my 77gs550, the choke is on the left side of the carbs and up indicates that it is on. Down is off.Comment

I disagree. My 450 has the same carbs and choke on is lever down.
There should be a word stamped into the lever, which either says CHOKE, meaning choke on, or OPEN, meaning choke off, and an arrow indicating which direction the word applies to.
If you ever have the carbs off you can really find out for sure. A carb is choked when the big plate covers the breather intakes. Just look at it.

Work in progress 8O Today I check the charging circuit with my freinds voltmeter, and hopefully I win these carbs on ebay, since no one can figure out what's wrong with mine. Mechanic included.Comment
