    GS1100GK misfire fuel or electrical?

Hi all, It`s Steve from Oz. again, hoping you gui`s can help out again The problem this time is my 84/ 1100GK has started misfiring at around 3,000-3,500 R.P.M. I thorght water in fuel? as it started playing up not long after refueling ,I cleaned carbs ,drained tank etc. still no joy I don`t know if the electricals might be to blame or not? It`s not to bad first of ,but after afew miles or so it starts missing . I`ve had pinging problems for while and have been useing octane booster in the fuel witch seamed to help. Any idears would great as I don`t what to check next. Cheers Steve.

I am most definately not an expert on electrics but it sounds like how my GS1100G acted a while ago. I thought it to be gasoline/carb problems. As it turned out, my coil went bad! Replaced it and all has been honky dorry! Seems that as they start to go bad, they tolerate heat less and less and the symptoms get worse and worse...

Thanks Gerryy. that might be the go, but is there any way to test the coils as the problem is at 3000/3500 R.P.M Cheers steve from Oz.

        misfire

How does it act above 3500? If it goes away, I'd say it's in your carbs and not in the coils.

          re: misfiring GK

I had the same problem with my GK. I replaced the spark plug boots (at end of coil wires) and the problem went away. The boots cost me about $12 in total. (I have posted in another thread the part number of these NGK boots).

I just had a similar misfiring experience at 2000-2500 rpm. Upon inspecting the plugs, I found that #3 was blackened (9000 miles), but the others were clean. I also tested the coils for resistance and checked the carbs for excess fuel (smelling gas), but did not have any. I replaced the plugs, and have put on a few more miles without any further problems.

              GS1100GK misfires fuel or electical?

Thanks everbody in GS. land . I think I`ve fixed the old girl , while checking the coils ( having to remove the plugs ) I found the same plug condition as Jeffem mentions, except it was number 2 . cleand up plugs as they were out any way , checked all the other stuff you all advised ( coils & leads ok ) checked carby balance & found they were well out of sink, one of the ajusting screws & lock nuts had come loose , must have fouled the plug I think Set carby`s again & with clean plugs it`s running well again Thanks again guys for all your suggestions.Steve from Oz. I love this site.
