A Honda CB750 riding friend put me on to this, and we've both volunteered our services (and our bikes) to test this new system, and Abel Podger from Mototronic has accepted our "expressions of interest" for what they are, two classic bike guys genuinely interested in new accessories for our bikes, and not just two old scroungers trying to get a discounted price on one or two of his brilliant new ignitions, he he!
Anyway, have a read of this, it's pretty extensive but very interesting, so I'm looking forward to receiving and testing my new unit very soon!
Cheers, Terry.

Mototronic New Breed Electronic Ignition Solutions. Below is a more comprehensive overview of the product features for your information. Mototronic's new Electronic Ignition systems, the Mototronic GT and Mototronic R incorporate a base feature-set of M-Technologies, and have been developed to maximise the ease of installation on your motorcycle due to a maximum level of customisation to your particular engine.
The range of M-technologies on the Mototronic GT and R, include: ? Intelligent Engine Sensor ? Active Coil Control ? Cylinder Firing Management ? Permanent Magnet Generator ? SmartStart technology ? PC Programmability (only available on the Mototronic R)
Intelligent Engine Sensor Mototronic has developed a sophisticated engine sensor that allows the ignition unit to monitor the exact crank position at all times. This has a huge advantage when it comes to setting up the Mototronic unit for the first time.
When setting up the initial timing, all you need to do is find the TDC for each cylinder on its compression stroke (dial gauge in the spark plug hole), and input this into the unit’s memory, and the timing is set. This takes into account any crank misalignment or even a rephased crank with ease, and provides you timing accuracy better than a degree up to 18,000 rpm.
The triggering unit knows when the unit is switched on exactly what position the engine is in thus it knows exactly what cylinder needs to be fired at what time from the moment the bike is first kicked over.
Active Coil Control Active Coil Control provides coil learning and monitoring meaning that the Mototronic unit will work with any coil on the market, regardless of whether it is a high performance after-market coil, or your original coils. It also optimises spark energy to the coils, and monitors their condition.
The unit automatically checks the coils for their characteristics each time it is switched on, and alters the coil saturation time accordingly. Hence the unit is able both to protect itself against being fried if a set of coils with very low primary resistance are installed, but also it maximises the coil energy for what ever coils are used. In fact the lower the primary resistance, the better out systems like it.
Cylinder Firing Management Mototronic Cylinder Firing Management functionality means that the coils are fired individually as and when required by your engine, rather the alternative technique of firing all coils at the same time. Individual cylinder timing can be adjusted via the controls on the unit to take into account slight variations in the crank angles.
The Mototronic unit does not require installation of a dual output coil like some units. To replace independent coils with a single dual output coil is silly to us as the single coil has to fire twice as often as two coils, and at higher revs never gets a chance to fully saturate. Permanent Magnet Generator Mototronic’s Permanent Magnet Generator has been developed as an alternative electrical power unit to running a battery, thus making our unit self generating.
It is extremely thin and light when compared to your original generator, and is designed for straightforward replacement. Mototronic PMG increased power output will run your full electrical system as well as our ignition unit, and provides you with a high-tech alternative to running a heavy battery in a “total loss” set-up. Please note that it is only for 2-strokes running dry generators, and for Suzuki GT750/550/380 owners our generator must be purchased in order to run our ignition unit.
SmartStart technology Mototronic SmartStart technology incorporates the ability of the systems to be fully operational at very low voltages and kickstart advance delay. The Mototronic range include the ability of the unit to be fully operational and deliver maximum spark energy when there is only 4 volts from a battery (where used), or at kick starting speeds for bikes with a coil magneto.
In either case, you are guaranteed to avoid any ‘weak spark’ due to low voltage. In addition, the unit automatically sets the ignition advance to Top Dead Centre at kick starting speed, thus minimising the chance for kick back. The unit reverts to normal ignition advance once the engine is operating above 800 rpm.
PC Programmability The Mototronic R is a fully user-programmable unit to provide you with full control over advance curves and rev limits through PC programmability. It will be available for those who wish to go beyond this base feature-set into full Ignition Management for racing or high-tech street purposes, The programming software is provided free with the unit and once installed on a PC, gives you a graphical interface allowing you to create and store your own 2-D advance curves. We are aiming to allow 3-D advances curves at a later date.
The ignition unit itself has three separate memory locations for your advance curves. This allows you the option of running three separate curves in the unit at any one time and swapping between then in real time (with the engine running) to allow yourself to choose which one is best for situation.
Apart from the three user memory locations there is a location containing the original manufacturer’s advance curve, which is provided as a “safe” mode, and can be selected at any time. You can spend your nights using the software working out your best curve (or curves), loading them into your unit and then testing your ideas in practice. If you want to change it at the track, then load the software onto a laptop and take this to the track. Then you can make changes on the run as required.
Register your Interest! The website is being prepared for launch currently but will be located at www.mototronic.com so stay tuned over the coming weeks.
