in a pile of stuff.....the repair book shows a single air cleaner element , cylindrical....one i have is an oval type, is this a big deal for air flow for the 1000 or no?

Ive got a 79 GS1000L that came with an airbox (not installed on the bike)

I'd guess that it doesn't matter a whole lot, try it and find out. Just put it on and read your plugs afterwards to get the answer.

I don't know which book you have. The air filter you describe is that which is found on an L model, so you're probably OK.
