1000S and 1000E tank the same or not?
I have the option of buying a GS1000 gas tank but it would go on my '79 GS1000S. Now you don't see a lot of thou's on the road over here, more 750 and 550's with the odd 850 thrown in for variety so I haven't seen another one in a while but there's this thing I see on some pics, is there some sort of recess or something on the sides of the tank that the S doesn't have?Tags: None

The present tank from Suzuki is to 44100-49031-13L and it is listed as fitting both the E and the S models but there is a difference.
Tank for GS1000S
Tank for GS1000E

the e and the s both have recesses on the 1978 year, every year after that they went flush.

For 1980 the "S" used vinyl stickers. For both years '79/'80 the "E" and "S" are the same bike respectively. The "S" simply had the "Wes Cooley Replica" options on it.

Robinjo, the geometry will be the same. I think the S model has a sticker so you will either have to run the nameplate or bondo it up. The recess on the side was on the 78 models, and I have seen people try and bondo that up(!).
The recess was on the tail section too. I don't know for sure if European models were exactly the same.

The late (Dutch) 79/80 GS1000E models had the same fuel tank as the GS1000S, except the Suzuki badge was screwed onto the tank. If you would find a late 79/80 GS1000E tank, all you have to do is to fill the little holes for the screws.
Earlier tanks have a large recess in them; not easy to fill up.

about the S, wes cooley's orginal bike was a 78 which the S model was based off, indirectly there was a S model in 78.

Very cool info!
I just want to know what handle bars Cooley used. They're not the emodel bars. Are they a stock bar?
I too am pondering going for the Cooley look on my 1000e. I've just never looked @ the bars.

I'm using red anodised Superbike bars right now with a 2" rise and I love them.

Be careful with the bars.. getting the rise right means the difference with the throttle cables not touching the tank (without twisting the assembly around) and having clearance with the master cylinder resevoir.
I used an after market english tourer type bar that I narrowed up, but the tripple clamp top cushion was tough to get in place.. the rise was too close to the top clamp.. I enede up with a genuine new old stock set of e-bay.. I have the part number if you want to chase them down.
Robin I am not sure if the 1000S tank is unique but using the 1000E tank with the bagde screw mount filled does work.. I have bought one tank out of the wreckers that was a smooth side (no badge mount) but finding them is like rocking horse poo..
Best Regards Simon

You are not kidding with the rise of the bars 8O

Having the flat drag bars on meant turning the throttle assembly so the cables (actually the metal bends) cleared the tank.
