Exhaust pipe crossover

Hi everyone. I'm a new member. I have a question about exhaust.
On my 1982 GS450LZ the exhaust pipes are connected together by a pipe that crosses under the engine. My question is WHY? Is this needed for performance? The pipe is rusting away. I'm thinking of just cutting the pipe out and plugging the holes. Two seperate pipes.

Crossover pipes will boost low- end performance. Of course, if the pipe is rotted away, the system isn't doing it's job anyway. I'd pull that old piece off and run it by a mufler shop. Chances are they can set you up with a replacement pretty cheap.

Mine were pretty far shot and it was leaking horribly from that area. When the pipe cracked just before that x-over I had them weld small bits of pipe taking that x-over out so they are seperate now. It runs pretty good still, but I guess it might be better with it still there.

Thanks guys. Appreciate your comments. A buddy of mine has welding equipment. I'll see if I can rebuild the crossover section. Mine as well try to keep the bike as original as possible.
