engine runs just about

I have recently purchased a 1979 gs850n it has not run for six years,so I removed the carbs cleaned them managed to get engine running for short time only with air box removed and putting my hands over air intake on back of carbs allso when it did run it did not idle it had to be held on throttle and there was a lack of sucksion on carb no three any one have any idea whats wrong, thanks ,

I had this same issue. What was wrong mith my bike? Well it was Air leaking around the boots on the airbox side of the carbs. I put new clamps on them and made sure they were sealed good, and kaboom she runs like a champ.

thanks joe I will look at the seals to check for leaks and fire her up again.

Check the intake boots and change the O rings. INSTALL THE AIR BOX
IT WILL NOT RUN WITHOUT IT
