    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message.   • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

How much do you guys think my 81 1100E motor weighs without the clutch, stator, starter motor and valve cover? all the egine covers are off also. Think I can lift it without needing an ambulance?
 
Jethro, don't even try it. Trust me on this, you don't even want to think about a hernia. Get help picking it up.
 
Really? I was guessing less than 150 lbs which I should easily be able to muscle out, but I might be wrong. Any more and I would definitely get help.
 
it would depend on who, or what you are.
peoples abilities vary widely, it is impossible to say whether you could man handle it or not without knowing your abilities.
some of us have done it, some of us have trouble with just a head.
ether way, it is not light and it is best to have help, it makes it much easier and helps prevent mashed fingers and scratched and banged up frame rails.
 
Why not put everything on it's side and lower the frame on to the engine?

The real problem is not exactly in lifting it. I can LIFT my 1150 engine, but I cant do anything with it once lifted. :-) Its impossible for me to control the weight so as to be able to lift it out of the bike's frame or to reinstall it. I bolted together an "A" frame of 2 x 4's with a 2 x 8 crosspiece to hang a chain hoist on and put nylon straps around the engine so I could hook onto them to pick it up. No scratches, no strain. :-)

The weight is liftable, but you have to be careful not to do your back in as it is awkward.
 
C'mon guys, I'm an engineer. No one knows if it is 114 lbs or 138? I guess the specs never talk about bare engine weight, so I don't expect anyone to have an exact weight.
 
87Kgs. fully assembled. Clear enough, I lifted my Kat's motor in and out several times by myself, just be careful.

I must mention I am 6'3" and over 90kgs myself
 
The cases themselves are really light. it's the crank assembly, the transmission, and the cylinders that really pack on the weight. The head is fairly heavy but nothing near the crank weight. If you can remove the head before removing or installing the engine that would help.

I'm from the old school of using what's handy. Have a floor jack under the frame to maneuver the engine around to line up the holes & use my mechanics seat to move the engine from the bike to the workbench. It's a 16v 750 & I'm guessing it weighs around 135.
 
I've hoisted them in and out of several different bikes and even done some amazing car and truck engine and transmission lifting myself already as I am a large strong person.

But, that being said, I am also going in next Thursday the 18th for triple hernia surgery that I didn't even know I had until the one started to bother me a bit.

Take that for what it is worth :?

I?m my case I think my body not being 19 and in shape is the issue but it can
happen to anyone when lifting heavy objects.

I just pulled my 750 16 valve motor and i was suprised how heavy it was i needed help and it was not easy . there is no way that motor can weigh only 135 lbs Get help
 
I've removed and installed my 850 engine by myself a couple of times, but I am larger and stronger than average. It wasn't fun...

Mainly, I was just anxious to get finished and didn't want to wait on a friend to show up and help.

The "side" technique is probably the best and safest by yourself.
 
Whilst re-building my Kat 1100 motor I thought I had done the Final build (yeah right :oops: ) I had carefully torqued everthing every thread had been cleaned and was easily able to be run in and out by hand etc. I was fantastically pleased :D , I lifted the motor into the chassis (by myself 8O ) installed the sump, installed the rocker cover, carefully torqued all the engine mounts, fitted the carbs;having cleaned and manually synched them, the ignition, cleaned and checked every electrical connection, carefully routed all the wiring, zip tied it all neatly and mostly hidden. Thought to myself, Hmm just one final check before I fire her up!!!!(insert twilight zone music here :wink: ) I removed the ignition cover put a 19mm socket on it and slowly turned the motor over, I got two-thirds of the way to a full revolution and the motor locked up!!!! (insert primal scream) It had taken an entire weekend to get to that point ( I started with the motor assembled on my bench) My wife and children scuttled away in fear of there lives!!! 8O . I had the motor out and back on the bench dis-assembeled in half an hour!!!! Without removing the sump the breather or rocker cover!!! I have no idea how!!! 8O the motor WILL NOT fit in or out with out removing at least the breather cover!!! I know I tried to get it back in with it fully assembled and it will not go into the frame.

I just finished pulling a 750 8 valve engine and replacing it with a 750 16 valve. I would call it about 185 lbs.

No help available so just figure out a way to do it solo (which is why I use the mechanics seat to roll the motor to the frame). I'm finishing a motor assembly today & will take the bathroom scales out to weigh it before it goes back in the frame.
