Oil Temp Sensor - info wanted

I've at last got around to fitting an oil cooler, after having the adaptor from Terry in Melbourne sitting here idle for about a year.

My old pressure sensor plate had a temp sensor fitted, but the bike didn't have the rest of the stuff, such as a guage or temp light. Can anyone tell me how the sensor operates?

Does is switch at a certain temperature, or does it run a guage from cool to hot etc?

The thing is marked VDO 801/25/1 150degreesC 6.83

I can fit it into the cooler at the halfway point by adapting an existing hole to take the thread, which will give me temp of the half-cooled oil.

sounds more like a thermostat than a sending unit...ie. it opens at 150C?

I think it's a temperature-sensitive resistor (Thermistor?) that grounds to the block. If I remember correctly it goes (+) -> oil temp guage -> temp sensor -> ground (-).

I have a similar old VDO temp sensor. You should find any VDO oil temp guage will work with it. All it does is vary the output resistance as the oil temp chnages. The guage then traslates this to actual temps.
