    taper bearings.

    are 'taper' roller bearings the same thing as 'roller' bearings on a gs ? thanks...h.g.

    NO the tapered brgs are used for the steering stem swing arm on the shaft models. They are different than the Roller brgs like those used on the crankshaft

      actually i was talking about the bearings on the front end 'sq.d.' on the triple tree. have a chance to get a front end but the guy says the bearings are 'taper roller bearings', was wondering if it would be the same as roller bearings. ...h.g.

        it depends on what the person knows, some bikes used "roller" bearings, they were ball bearings that rode loose in grooved races, and were a total pain in the you know what to mess with.
        when you went to take a steering head apart they would fall out and scatter to all corners of the floor.
        putting them back in wan't any fun ether.
        that is why many people converted to tapered roller bearings.
        1= they last longer
        2= they are stronger
        3= they are allot easer to work with
        4= they use a cage to hold the bearings to the inner race

        plain roller (ball) bearings are more common on smaller bikes, and older bikes
        the bigger GS's use taper roller bearings stock.
