Has anyone used a gauge-type carb synchronizer? Cycle Recycle has one on their web site. These don't use mercury, of course. I wonder if these are any better than the suck-the-metal-up-the-tube type.

I think there are a couple of downsides to the dial type vacuum guages.
1. the graduations on the guage are very small and that makes it difficult to be accurate. Also, keep in mind you will be reading fine graduations probably from 4 feet away during part of the process of synching.

2. Dial type guages must be calibrated everytime they are used.
That is downright inconvenient.
